Sunday 29th September – The Graeme Wilson Quartet – Splinter Jazz

Scottish saxophonist Graeme Wilson has been a key member of many North East bands since moving to Tyneside around 2005,
but not until October 2012 did he appear as leader of his own group. It was worth waiting for; the quartet’s debut at the Central Bar was so good that Schmazz immediately snapped him up for the Cluny gig.

Of course, a band with this quality of line-up promises riches before they’ve played a single note: Paul Edis and his regular drum partner Adam Sinclair have proved their worth over and over again, both in Paul’s own groups and as accompanists for a stream of star names, while Andy Champion is in the top echelon of bassists anywhere in the UK. But their abilities were given full rein by Graeme’s wonderful compositions, some previously aired with the Voice of the North Orchestra and Splinter Group, others surfacing for the first time with this quartet.

And naturally Graeme himself was at his magisterial best in this situation, his devotion to Coltrane always evident, but re-cast in ceaselessly original and imaginative ways.

Delius, Brice & Sanders

Toby Delius (reeds)
Olie Brice (bass)
Mark Sanders (drums)
The first gig of the Autumn for Jazz North East . . . and it’s a stunner.
Bassist Olie Brice has developed a knack for linking up with top flight improvisers – he and drummer Mark Sanders were last here with Chicago megastar Ken Vandermark – and he’s done it again by persuading Berlin-based Toby (Tobias to his mum) Delius to come to the UK for a short tour.
Despite being born in Oxford, Delius is an unfamiliar name to most jazz fans here, but in mainland Europe he’s regarded as a highly significant figure, one who combines considerable improvisational freedom with a strong core of rhythmic and lyrical structure, and a tone that has been described as having “the breathy bluster of Hawkins and Webster”. It’s an approach that was honed during twenty years in the fertile environment of the Amsterdam scene, where he worked (and continues to work) regularly with iconic figures like Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink, absolute masters at sustaining a sense of swing no matter how far ‘out’ the music goes.
Apart from occasional forays with the Instant Composers Pool, Delius has been an infrequent visitor to the UK. This is certainly the first time he’s ever come to Tyneside, but now he’s arriving in the gold standard company of  Brice and Sanders, it’s a mouth-watering opportunity to discover just what we’ve been missing.
